Following a second-place finish in the 3A Western Slope League standings and a run into the second round of the 3A state soccer playoffs, the Roaring Fork Rams’ girls soccer team landed two players on the All-Conference first team under head coach Nick Forbes, while the Coal Ridge Titans — who finished third in the league under head coach Damon Martinez — also landed two on the first team.
Roaring Fork junior Emily Broadhurst and junior Lucia Penzel earned first-team honors for the Rams, while seniors Adriana Vargas and Alyssa Wenzel cracked the first team for the Titans.
Broadhurst tied for the team-lead in goals with seven, while dishing out two assists to contribute 16 points for the Rams, while Penzel added two goals and seven assists for 11 points as the Rams finished 9-8 (5-2 in 3A WSL) on the year. The Rams knocked off DSST: Stapleton in the first round of the playoffs before falling to the eventual state runner-up Jefferson Academy in the second round, 3-2.
Vargas scored six goals and added six assists for 18 points for Coal Ridge, while Wenzel led the way with 14 goals and two assists for a team-high 30 points for the Titans. Coal Ridge earned a state playoff berth after a one-year hiatus in 2018. The Titans fell to No. 8 Eagle Ridge Academy in the first round of the 3A state playoffs.
Grand Valley senior Shaya Chenoweth earned first-team honors for the Cardinals after scoring a team-high 19 goals, adding seven assists for a team-high 45 points on the year.
On the honorable mention team, Roaring Fork senior goalkeeper Odalis Corcuera, freshman Macey Peery, and sophomore Sydney Schramer earned accolades for the Rams. Schramer recorded one assist on the year for Roaring Fork while providing shutdown defense in front of Corcuera, who stopped 42 shots on the year. Peery scored four goals and added four assists for 12 points in her first year at the varsity level.
For Coal Ridge, sophomore defender McKayla McKissack earned accolades for the Titans, recording one assist on the year while providing strong defense in the back half under Martinez. Junior Maren Hough also earned honorable mention accolades after scoring three goals and adding two assists for eight points on the year.
Grand Valley senior Kailey Davis earned honorable mention accolades for the Cardinals after recording one assist and playing tenacious defense on the back half.
The Aspen Skiers swept the Coach of the Year and Player of the Year awards as head coach John Gillies was named Coach of the Year as the Skiers won the 3A WSL with a perfect 7-0 mark before reaching the third round of the state playoffs. Sophomore Kelley Francis was named the Player of the Year for the league after scoring a school-record 39 goals while adding 15 assists for a league-high 93 points. The Skiers saw Francis, junior Payton Curley, and senior Margo McHugh earn first-team honors.
Basalt saw junior Emma Day earn first-team honors, while junior Taylor Glen earned honorable mention accolades for the Longhorns.
