FARMER’S KORNER — Eagle Valley boys basketball bounced back into the win column with a 50-43 victory over Summit County on Saturday on the road.
While there were some noteworthy statistical performances, give it up for Xaver Johnson. The Devils senior kept a lid on the Tigers’ Wyatt Buller, who has been giving most of the 4A Slope fits.
Here’s a cool statistical line: Jess Moser had 15 rebounds, seven steals and six points against Summit. Jacob Medina led the Devils (8-10 overall and 3-7 in the 4A Slope) with 20 points. Meanwhile, Tony Hernandez had yet another double-double, 15 points, and 10 rebounds.
Hernandez is listed at 5-foot-11, so he’s not big, by any means. Yet the senior keeps on churning out rebounds.
“He just has a huge heart,” Devils coach Justin Brandt said. “He has a laser focus and anticipates well. Offensive rebounding is always assuming you can get it. The best thing is that even when he can’t get it, he tips it out to his teammates.”
In the lidlifter, Eagle Valley girls basketball fell to Summit, 56-38.

Saints boys beat North Park
EDWARDS — Vail Christian boys basketball bounced back from a brutal 54-50 loss at Paonia by taking it out on North Park on Saturday in a 59-33 win.
“Good bounce back,” Saints coach Sheldon Kuhns said. “We took care of business, got the lead and took care of business.”
E.J. Koller dropped 21 points on the Wildcats with Alec Moritz adding 12.
Vail Christian (12-6 overall and 9-2 in the 2A Slope) can still clinch the No. 1 seed for the District 5 Tournament with a win against Soroco on Friday.
Meanwhile, Vail Christian’s girls lost a heartbreaker to North Park, 48-47. The visiting Panthers were ranked No. 7 in the Class 1A rating-percentage index.
Sarah Heredia had 18 points, while Grace McCurdy had an epic game with 13 points and 16 rebounds.
The Saints (10-8 and 5-5) are probably kicking themselves a little bit after an 11-for-21 performance from the free-throw line.
Nonetheless, Vail Christian’s girls are in the running for the No. 4 seed in the District 5 Tournament, which would mean a home game in the quarterfinals.
Huskies hockey takes down Glenwood
EAGLE — Battle Mountain hockey won its first road game ever at the Eagle Ice Rink & Pool on Saturday.
As weird as that sounds, the Huskies were the road team during a 5-2 win against Glenwood Springs as the Demons also use the Eagle Rink as their home ice.
Not only did that avenge a 4-3 overtime loss to the Demons back in January, but it boosted the Huskies’ chances of winning the Peak Conference. Battle Mountain and Crested Butte are tied at 7-2 in the standings and the two teams meet at Dobson on Friday with the winner taking the crown.
Joey Beveridge scored twice for Battle Mountain (9-4-3), while the Huskies’ Parker Nash, Luke Grimaldi, and Garrett Flaagan also lit the lamp.
Palisade sweeps Huskies
PALISADE — Battle Mountain basketball dropped a pair of games to Palisade on Saturday afternoon.
The girls lost by a count of 43-25, while the guys fell in a low-scoring 41-31 affair.
Both teams are home on Tuesday to host Glenwood Springs.
