VAIL — Ski patrollers from Vail and Beaver Creek have partnered with the Vail Police Department to host a free Snow Safety Awareness Night from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11 at Donovan Pavilion in West Vail.
A combination of factors, including terrain, weather, and higher snow totals than in seasons past have led to the current composition of the Colorado snowpack. In order to avoid getting caught in avalanches, backcountry travelers are encouraged to learn about the potential hazards associated with backcountry travel.
This free community avalanche awareness presentation will highlight the human factor hazard, as well as provide an overview of tools that can be used to navigate available weather and avalanche resources, decision-making considerations and appropriate equipment.
Presenters include:
• Dale Atkins, a snow science and backcountry rescue expert.
• Dan Smith, vice president of Vail Mountain Rescue Group and mission coordinator.

• Kreston Rohrig, a Colorado Avalanche Information Center forecaster for the Vail/Summit area.

Additionally, there will be informational booths including: Backcountry Access, Walking Mountains Science Center, Apex Mountain School, Paragon Guides, National Outdoor Leadership School, Weston Backcountry, Vail Mountain Rescue Group, Big Heart Big Hands and the Glide Project.
