If you missed it the first time around, you now have a second chance to discover the story of the missing months of the 10th Mountain Division following the end of World War II as the Colorado Snowsports Museum has scheduled an encore presentation of Chris Anthony’s “Untold Post-War Tales of the 10th Mountain Division” for Saturday, Feb. 16.
Held in conjunction with Vail’s Legacy Weekend, the presentation is part of the museum’s new Through the Lens lecture series that debuted in December. Through the Lens features presentations by notable scientists, athletes and historians as they share stories and experiences that have helped shape Colorado’s rich ski heritage. The presentations are hosted at the museum from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on varying dates, with beer, wine and appetizers served.

This particular episode of 10th Mountain history took place during May and June of 1945, with events that have not been completely documented, most probably because they took place following Germany’s surrender to the Allies in May of 1945.
Spurred on by the receipt of a manuscript forwarded to Anthony by retired Brigadier General of the Slovenian Mountain Troops Janez Kavar, Anthony realized that the 10th soldiers had been deployed to the region to push Yugoslavian Communist revolutionary leader Marshal Tito back into what is now Slovenia from Italy. Following this successful mission the U.S. mountain troops celebrated by organizing the first post-war ski race on Mount Mangart.
Inspired by this chain of events, Anthony set out on a quest to produce a documentary film around the post-war adventures of the 10th Mountain Division. The project will cover the months in question, documenting the 10ths actions and the Mount Mangart race.

In addition to the encore Through the Lens presentation, the museum will also be screening the documentary film “Climb to Glory” on a continuous loop throughout the weekend. The Colorado Snowsports Museum features the most comprehensive 10th Mountain Division exhibit in the nation.
Through the Lens will continue on Wednesday, Feb. 20, as Dr. Jon Kedrowski addresses Colorado’s winter weather and climate, while renowned Western State University professor Dr. Duane Vandenbusche will discuss the history of skiing in Colorado in March.
