Vail Christian boys basketball makes it five in a row

HOTCHKISS — It wasn’t a Renoir, but it will do.

Vail Christian boys basketball got out of Hotchkiss with a 69-58 win, its fifth in a row.

As always, you take road wins in the 2A Slope and forget about the Russian judge’s scores for artistic merit.

The Bulldogs’ Jacob Stucker, all 7 feet of him, gave the Saints some problems. Vail Christian adjusted by putting Zach McKeever on him.

Speaking of McKeever, he had an above average game with 22 points and 18 rebounds. Put up numbers like that, and you don’t have to walk home from Hotchkiss. In fact, he might have gotten his choice of seat on the bus home.

Tommy O’Neil had a big night as well with eight points and 11 boards. Alec Mortiz went off for 19 points, and the Saints moved to 7-4 overall and 4-0 in the 2A Slope.

“We got off to a slow start in the first quarter,” Saints coach Sheldon Kuhns said. “A 7-footer presents some difficulties. He protected the rim and made us adjust.”

Vail Christian is off until Friday when it heads to West Grand, where the Gore family is out of eligibility.

Also in Hotchkiss, the Vail Christian girls basketball team fell to the host Bulldogs, 57-32.

Abby Kuhns led the Saints (5-6, 1-3) with seven points.

“Our shots weren’t going in,” Saints coach Cynthia Robinson said. “”We played good defense, very aggressively.”
