VAIL — There’s still time to participate in the initial stages of an information-gathering process that will be used to help guide future improvements to town-owned facilities and properties in the heart of Vail. Community members have until 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25 to take part in the Civic Area Plan online survey. The survey is available at EngageVail.com, the town’s newest community outreach forum. The Engage Vail site will provide ongoing updates as well as additional surveys as the project progresses over the next 10 months.
The Civic Area planning process was launched Dec. 11 and is being used to identify opportunities for a number of prominent town sites encompassing a 10-acre area including the Lionshead Parking and Transportation Center, the charter bus lot, Dobson Ice Arena, the Vail Public Library, the Vail Municipal Building complex, as well as sections of Gore Creek that traverse the area.
To date, the online survey has captured opinions from more than 200 respondents. The survey asks questions about the qualities that make for great civic spaces in Vail, what is working, what is missing and any “big ideas” to be pursued. It takes about 10 minutes to complete the survey and anyone who loves Vail is invited to register and take part.
Responses from the survey, as well as a series of stakeholder meetings, will be used to identify themes that will help shape the next steps in the master planning process. An update on the information-gathering will be presented to the Vail Town Council on Feb. 19 with opportunities for public comment. Also during the meeting, the council will be asked to prioritize focus areas for future planning efforts and investigations related to ideas derived from the community.
The project team will then involve civil engineering, environmental, traffic and economic/market specialists to delve into the initial themes. Up to three alternative development concepts will be prepared and following review by the Town Council and community, a preferred concept will be selected with formal review and adoption taking place throughout the summer and fall.
Completion of the Civic Area Plan has been identified as a high priority by the council. Upon adoption by the council in 2019, the plan will provide guidance on future decision-making, funding and implementation of improvements to the Civic Area.
