Our national symbol was once withered by the pesticide DDT — there were only about 10 nesting pairs in Colorado in the 1970s, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
But after spending some time on the Endangered Species List, and learning how to adapt to encroaching humans, they’re back, so you’ll likely have no trouble spotting one this winter.
As many as 1,200 birds will visit our state this winter. There are currently an estimated 125 nesting pairs, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
Eagles are still protected, and they’re certainly not as common as crows, so you’ll still need to be smart about where you look. We have a few suggestions on established spots below, followed by some general tips on finding them on your own.
