More than 30 roosters are currently being held at the Summit County Animal Shelter this week after the birds were impounded as part of an apparent criminal investigation.
Colin Remillard, a spokesman with the Colorado State Patrol, said that troopers pulled over an SUV heading westbound on I-70 near milepost 201, just outside of Frisco, early on Wednesday afternoon. Remillard said that the vehicle had temporary plates from Kentucky, and was pulled over because the tags weren’t clearly visible.
Upon further inspection, Remillard said that troopers discovered “odd” signs inside the vehicle, including 33 roosters and strange explanations from the three men inside. The roosters were taken to the Summit County Animal Shelter in Frisco. Remillard noted that the birds would be euthanized if they are not claimed within five days. Representatives with the Summit County Animal Control and Shelter declined to comment or answer any questions on the case or the animals.
Remillard said that the three men were released, and haven’t been charged with any crimes. In addition to the roosters, the vehicle was also impounded because of “indications of criminal activity,” while law enforcement officials await a search warrant to look into the incident further.
