Allison Silber named Summit County Mentor of the Month

Summit County Mountain Mentors has honored Allison Silber as its Mentor of the Month for November, according to the community-based mentorship program that matches volunteers with children ages 8-16.

The program aims to positively influence Summit County’s youth to lead healthy lifestyles through a consistent, one-on-one relationship with an adult. Research shows this kind of connection helps young people overcome many of life’s challenges, as well as learn skills that prove valuable in the child’s development.

The program paired Silber with a boy named Kevin. Since joining the mentors, Silber has come to enjoy seeing how she can impact Kevin’s life.

“I’ve been able to watch him grow and become more confident every week,” she said. “He is such a bright kid and has so many wise words that he shares with me. I also love how he always brightens up my week no matter how stressful it has been.”

Choosing her favorite activity with Kevin is a difficult one, but the Frisco BBQ Challenge was certainly among them because she got to watch Kevin take it all in and try a few new things.

“His face kept lighting up, and it made my day,” Silber said, adding that any one of their craft nights could also make the list and she now has a wealth of Kevin’s artwork to remember their time together.

Many children in the county apply for a mentor but have to wait several months before being matched. For anyone who’s considering becoming a mentor, Silber highly recommends doing it.

“If you are considering becoming a mentor, sign up,” she said. “You won’t regret it. You get to have a positive impact in a child’s life, and it definitely has a positive impact in your own life.”
