Appliance Factory & Mattress Kingdom is expected to soon bring new life to a vacant downtown Silverthorne storefront.
According to an announcement from the company, Appliance Factory & Mattress Kingdom, which boasts being the nation’s largest discount appliance and mattress retailer, is now leasing the property with expectations to open a store there later this month.
At 131 Blue River Parkway, it’s a prime location on Highway 9, by the exit 205 onramp to Intestate 70. Once open, the Silverthorne store will be the retailer’s 21st.
The space has a long, rich history and was most recently occupied by Habitat for Humanity before the building was vacated about two years ago.
The property has a rich history dating back to the 1930s when the Roush family originally homesteaded over 400 acres in Silverthorne, according to the news release announcing the lease.
Robert and Myrth Roush reportedly left Imperial, Nebraska, in the late 1920s and, after a short stop in Denver, settled in what’s become Silverthorne’s outlet district. The company says that there was just one porch light on the 400-plus acre plot in 1930.
Prior to starting construction on Lake Dillon in 1961, the city agreed to move the Roush family home from the base of what’s now the Dillon Lake Dam to Rainbow Drive.
In 1977, Robert and Myrth Roush’s son, Shelden, erected a commercial building at the location to run Summit Honda, serving landscapers, bikers and recreational enthusiasts throughout the High Country until 1988.
One year later, the family started leasing the property to a Summit County RE/Max franchise, which lasted until 2011.
When the recession hit, property was virtually impossible to sell or lease. Habitat for Humanity eventually took over the retail space but after several years Habitat outgrew it and the property was again left unoccupied until now.
