Nearly 50 people took part in Arapahoe Basin Ski Area’s Beacon Bowl fundraiser on Saturday, an annual event that includes a beacon search competition.

At the 17th annual event, it was Dah Scahhura who won the recreational division with a time of one minute and 56 seconds. Other top finishers in the recreation division included Ben Ceorwin (2:16), Parker Malheke (2:39.5) and Charley Walkowiak (2:59).

In the professional division, Matt Janzen took the title with a time of 2:58, followed by Dominic Vellone (3:14) and Ryan Zarter (3:27).

There were 49 total registrants who took part in the event, including 17 in the recreational division, 31 industry professionals, including many ski patrollers, and one participant in the junior division.

The annual event is a fundraiser for the Friends of the Colorado Avalanche Information Center and includes the beacon search competition, a beacon practice area, avalanche dog demonstrations, live and silent auctions, ski and snowboard demos, and an apres party with pizza and beer specials.

The event was conceived 17 years ago by A-Basin’s ski patrol and is one of four fundraising events hosted by A-Basin each year. Participants include ski patrollers from across the state plus backcountry skiers wanting to hone their rescue skills.

The Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC) is a program within the Colorado Department of Natural Resources. The mission of the CAIC is to provide avalanche information, education and promote research for the protection of life, property and the enhancement of the state’s economy.
