Authorities identify 2 who died in Trough Road crash

Update at 5 p.m. Friday: The Colorado State Patrol has released the identities of the two fatalities. Toby J. Hargadine of Kremmling was identified as the driver and Crysta L. Berntsen of Minturn was identified as the passenger.

According to a state patrol press release, the truck was headed eastbound on Trough Road when it lost control and rotated counterclockwise, skidding off the left side of the road. It rolled numerous times down the cliff.

The Colorado State Patrol are continuing to investigate the crash.

Update at 4 p.m. Friday: While law enforcement officials are still investigating the cause and time of the incident where the car appeared to have driven over a cliff on Trough Road, they have released more information regarding the victims.

The driver, a 37-year-old male, was found dead on the scene after being ejected about 300 feet from the vehicle and the passenger, a 26-year-old female, was found dead still in her seat with the buckle fastened, according to Colorado State Trooper Gary Cutler.

No names have been released by any law enforcement agencies at this time.

The Colorado State Patrol continues to work on recovering the vehicle, a Toyota Tundra pickup, from where it landed about 705 feet from the road near mile post 9, according to Lt. Dan Mayer, a spokesperson for the Grand County Sheriff’s Office. Mayer estimated that the drop was around 70 or 80 degrees steep.

The truck was discovered at around 7:44 a.m. Friday by a road and bridge worker.

Update at 1:30 p.m. Friday: Authorities confirmed that two people died as a result of their vehicle going over the cliff on Trough Road. Crews remain at the scene.

9 a.m. Friday: A car was found Friday morning that appeared to have driven off Trough Road, also called County Road 1, near Inspiration Point, according to law enforcement.

The car was assumed to have gone off the cliff, which could be as far as 400 yards away from the road, located on the extreme west side of Grand County, overnight Thursday and was seen from the road by a road and bridge worker Friday.

Trough Road is located southwest of Kremmling, west of Highway 9.

Early reports from the scene indicated that the car contained two individuals, according to police, who said it is unlikely that anybody survived.
