Andrew Romanoff, the former speaker of the Colorado House and a democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate in 2020, held a forum with Summit County Democratic Party members at the Summit County Community and Senior Center in Frisco on Tuesday evening.

Romanoff is currently one of 11 Democrats vying to challenge Sen. Cory Gardner in the upcoming Senate election. He served in the Colorado House of Representatives from 2001 to 2009, serving as House Speaker from 2005 to 2009. He ran unsuccessfully for Senate in 2010 and for Congress in 2014, before becoming president and CEO for mental health non-profit Mental Health Colorado from 2015 to his announced Senate run.

Romanoff said he would make mental health and health care a priority if he is elected to serve on Capitol Hill.

“I spent four years trying to make a difference in the lives of people who face a mental health or substance use disorder,” Romanoff said. “We made some progress, but a lot of the progress is in danger of being rolled back by this administration and its enablers in the U.S. Senate.”

Romanoff also committed to working on issues concerning the environment, especially climate change. He expressed frustration with what he sees as a lack of urgency on these issues.

“This is life or death stuff, whether you’re talking about access to mental health care or substance use treatment, or health care in general, the fate of the planet is at stake, literally,” he said. “I’m not content to watch people in my state struggle or suffer or die on account of problems that we could fix, and I don’t see a sense of urgency on Capitol Hill.”
