The Lake Dillon Theatre Company’s latest play balances humor and empathy with the production of “Every Brilliant Thing.” The play was written by Duncan Macmillan and its run at New York’s Barrow Street Theatre was filmed for HBO.

Directed by Melinda Pfudnstein, the Lake Dillon play stars Colt Neidhard as the only actor in an interactive monologue performed with audience participation. As a mother battles chronic depression, a son creates a list of everything that makes life worth living, such as ice cream and kung fu movies. This list then continues to grow as time passes.

The Guardian calls it “A heart-wrenching, hilarious play … One of the funniest plays you’ll ever see about depression — and possibly one of the funniest plays you’ll ever see, full stop.” Meanwhile, Time Out says the play “is sad, but it is also gloriously funny and exceptionally warm.”

Because “Everything Brilliant Thing” deals with mental health and suicide, it is recommend for teens and adults.

“Every Brilliant Thing” runs from Friday, Aug. 16, through Sept. 15 at the Henry Studio Theater, 460 Blue River Parkway. Tickets range from $24.50–$44.50. Visit LakeDillonTheatre.org to purchase.
