Historical photo shows avalanche path in same area as recent Peak 1 slide

A massive avalanche that carved a path as wide as a ski run near Peak 1 may not be the first of its kind in that area.

An historical photo shared by the Breckenridge Heritage Alliance (BHA) shows what looks to be a wide slide path in the same area. BHA archivist and collections manager Kris Ann Knish said the photo is most likely circa 1880s to 1900, based on the content of the other included photographs.

The caption on the original photo reads “view showing traces of ancient snow slides.” Meaning that slide potentially existed prior to the 1880s, though research is still ongoing to determine when it originated.

The photo comes from an album of card-mount photographs by Otto Westerman that had been donated to the BHA.
