There’s a heightened law enforcement presence at Summit High School today after a bullet was found inside the school. There is no active threat to students, staff or the facility, according to county officials.
Just before 8 a.m. today members of the school’s staff discovered a live .22 caliber bullet outside the boy’s locker room inside the school. The sheriff’s office’s school resource officer was on scene within moments, followed shortly by a number of other deputies who completed a two-hour security sweep of the building, said Sheriff Jaime FitzSimons.
FitzSimons said that students were locked inside their classrooms while deputies completed the search. Deputies swept through every room in the school looking for potentially concerning items like weapons or other ammunition, and school staff searched through students’ lockers for signs of weapons. Nothing of concern was discovered during the search, said FitzSimons.
FitzSimons noted that .22 caliber rounds are popular for small game hunting and target practice in the area, and said it’s possible that the round was left last night while the school hosted basketball games against Glenwood Springs High School.
“There was a lot of traffic in and out,” said FitzSimons.
The sheriff’s office will continue to have a high-visibility presense at the school throughout the day.
