Letter to the editor: Summit strives for safe, equitable and welcoming environment in schools

Summit School District is committed to providing safe, equitable and welcoming school environments to ensure children have a place to learn and thrive. As an IB school district, Summit’s aim is to empower internationally minded people who will create a better world. We are fortunate to have youths in our schools who are leading efforts to make our whole community a better, more inclusive place for all.

At Summit High School, an inspiring student group is advocating and promoting a safe and inclusive learning environment for all students, with a focus on immigrant and DACA students as part of the Mountain Dreamers club.

Last week, Mountain Dreamers joined the school board, which was powerful and inspirational. Thank you to Jessica Fernandez de la O, Emily Yaritza Lopez, Crystal Martinez-Lopez, Manuel Lopez and Maria Payan. The district and board are exceedingly proud and inspired by these students for courageously sharing their stories and perspectives.

Summit is dedicated to the well-being and safety of every student with the Safe, Equitable and Welcoming Environment Resolution adopted in 2017 as well as rigorous safety and security protocols and procedures. These protocols outline that contact from government agencies, officials and law enforcement is processed through the superintendent’s office with the assistance of legal counsel to ensure the protection of all students’ constitutional and legal rights.

The board believes it’s important to reaffirm Summit’s commitment with a comprehensive resolution to ensure that all children, regardless of race, color, religion, nationality, native language, immigration status, ancestry, creed, age, pregnancy, sex, gender identity/expression, marital status, sexual orientation, genetic information or special education needs are provided their constitutional right to a free K-12 public education. All Summit schools are committed to providing respectful, culturally inclusive interactions and collaboration as learning takes place in a safe, equitable and welcoming environment.
