See Oscar-nominated shorts with the Summit Film Society

The Summit Film Society will screen award-nominated shorts over three nights.

Beginning on Feb. 12, cinephiles can get their fill of this year’s Oscar-nominated short films at the Breckenridge Backstage Theatre before they win an Academy Award.

Tuesday’s event focuses on animated movies, while audiences can see documentaries on Feb. 19 and live action shorts on Feb. 26.

General admission is $12 per person and advance purchase is recommended as space is limited. Tickets can be bought online Bit.ly/SFSFeb12 or by calling the Breck Create Ticket Office at 970-547-3100. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show begins at 7. Concessions are available until 7:30.

Playing first at the theater, located at 121 S. Ridge St., are the following animated short films:

“Bao” — An aging Chinese mom suffering from empty nest syndrome gets another chance at motherhood when one of her dumplings springs to life as a lively, giggly dumpling boy.

“Late Afternoon” — The story of an elderly woman, Emily, who lives between two states, the past and the present. She searches for a connection within her vivid, but fragmented memories.

“Animal Behavior” — Five animals meet regularly to discuss their inner angst in a group therapy session led by a canine psychotherapist.

“Weekends” —The story of a young boy shuffling between the homes of his recently divorced parents and features dream-like moments mixed with the realities of a broken-up family.

“One Small Step” — From the day she witnesses a rocket launching into space on TV, Luna is driven to reach for the stars. In the big city, Luna lives with her loving father, who supports her with a humble shoe repair business he runs out of his garage.
