The skier who died after an accident on Quandary Peak on Sunday has been identified as 22-year-old Peter Jacob Wing of Denver, according to Summit County Coroner Regan Wood.
Wood said that the manner of death was accidental and caused by blunt force injuries suffered during a fall.
The Summit County Rescue Group responded to the call at about 11:20 on Sunday morning, utilizing a Flight For Life helicopter to reach Wing and provide advanced life support. Wing was pronounced deceased on scene, and his body was transported to St. Anthony Summit Medical Center in Frisco.
Wing is the county’s fifth fatality on the ski slopes this season. William Hass, 71, of Northbrook, Illinois, passed away following a cardiac event at Breckenridge Ski Resort on Jan. 7. On Dec. 16, 21-year-old Daniel Giger of Newport Beach, California, was pronounced deceased at St. Anthony Summit Medical Center after colliding with a tree at Breckenridge Resort. On Dec. 22, 52-year-old Daniel Mares, a resident of Arvada, died following a cardiac event at Keystone Resort. On Christmas Day, 66-year-old Durwood Marshall, a Silverthorne resident, also passed away after suffering a cardiac event.
Along with the five deaths in Summit, there have been at least three other skiing fatalities around Colorado this season. Bindu Pomeroy, 44, was killed in Vail’s backcountry. Bill Brockmueller, 26, passed away days after colliding with a tree at Eldora Mountain Resort. Peter Marshall, 40, was killed in an avalanche near Red Mountain Pass in Ouray.
