Summit County locals shine on home Nordic trails at 49th annual Frisco Gold Rush

Matt Rossman, 35, of Boulder won Saturday’s 20-kilometer skate race at the 49th annual Frisco Gold Rush Nordic ski races at the Frisco Peninsula, with a time of one hour and 32 seconds. Rossman finished seven seconds ahead of second-place finisher T.J. Thrasher, 40, of Steamboat Springs (1:00:39).

The top local Summit County finishers in the 20K race included a pair of 40-year-olds from Breckenridge: Todd Greenwood (third place, 1:02:11) and Olof Hedberg (fourth, 1:02:16).

Other top Summit County finishers in the 71-skier 20K race included Andy Richmond, 34, of Frisco (seventh, 1:05:49), Andy Hardy, 37, of Frisco (ninth, 1:06:15) and Stephen Oppito, 40, of Silverthorne (11th, 1:05:75).

Summit County’s top finishing female in the 20K race was Jill Sorensen, 41, of Dillon, who finished in second-place overall for females in the race, with a time of 1:15:33.

In the 7.5-kilometer skate race, the top local finishers included a pair of Summit Nordic Ski Club youngsters in Lasse Konecny of Breckenridge and Galen Grohusky of Frisco. The 15-year-old Konecny finished in second place overall in the 27-skier, 7.5K skate race, as his time of 22:28 was just under three minutes faster than the 14-year-old Grohusky’s third-place time of 25:24. Grohusky’s sister Aisley was the second-place woman in the 7.5K skate race, and sixth overall, with a time of 27:42.

In the 29-skier 7.5K classic race, the top Summit County finisher was Gunnar Ohlson, 25, of Frisco. Summit County 10-year-old Carter Niemkiewicz also had a standout showing, finishing in fourth place with a time of 33:41.

And in the 1K junior race, Dillon 11-year-old Eden Dayton crossed the finish line first at a time of 3:22, ahead of Heidi Frey, 9, of Breckenridge (3:42), Thane Varble, 9, of Buena Vista (4:01) and Nico Florio, 9, (4:06) and Lucy Greenwood, 7, (5:34), both of Breckenridge.
