The Summit County Shooting Range, located on Landfill Road in Keystone near the Summit County Resource Allocation Park (SCRAP), will temporarily limit its normal operating hours in order to reduce stress on the wintering elk herd in the area.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife has requested the hours reduction because a local elk herd has been severely stressed by the heavy snow. During the harshest part of winter, there is little food for elk to eat, which creates enough stress to threaten their survival as they live off of fat stores. To prevent further stress caused by the sound of gunfire, the shooting range will have limited hours through April 15, depending on conditions.
The reduced operating hours, effective Saturday, March 30, will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., daily until further notice. The normal hours for the range are 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. from April to October, and 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. from November to March.
