The Summit Tigers varsity hockey team fought to a 1-1 tie against the Aspen Skiers on Friday night at Stephen C. West Ice Arena in Breckenridge.
The Tigers held the advantage in shots on goals over the Skiers, 46-32, and opened up the scoring when defenseman Nick Davis scored an even-strength goal at 8:48 of the first period, assisted by forward Max Bonenberger. Aspen responded fewer than five minutes later with an even-strength goal of their own from Robert Fitzgerald, assisted by Henry Morrison.
Aspen took their first lead of the game at 5:36 of the second period when Jack Pevny converted a power-play goal assisted by Fitgerald and Matthew Rigney. The Tigers rallied at the end of the period, though, forcing a power-play opportunity that was ultimately capitalized on by forward Mark Bellavance.
The game remained at a draw through both the third period and overtime session, as Tigers goalie Maksim Rashchupkin amassed 30 saved against 32 shots on goal through the 65-minute contest.
On the season, Bellavance leads the team with nine goals while fellow Tigers forwards Isaac Eland and Zach Carleton have found the back of the net seven times. Eland also leads the team in assists on the year with 11, while Bellavance and Bonenberger have contributed seven and six helpers respectively.
In net, Rashchupkin has made 200 saves on the season while Marco Vogelbacher has stopped 115 shots.

On the season, the Tigers hold a 3-8-1 record and will next play at home at Stephen C. West Ice Arena in Breckenridge on Saturday at 7 p.m.
Alpine skiing
The Summit High school Alpine ski team hosted a seven-team slalom meet at Copper Mountain Resort on Friday where they saw a pair of top-10 finishes and where seven skiers qualified for slalom at states.
On the Alpine race course on the Copperopolis run on the center-east side of the mountain, freshman Olyvia Snyder finished in fifth place and qualified for states in the girls race with a time of one minute and 50.19 seconds. In the boys race, Summit sophomore Joey Hodge finished in ninth place with a time of 1:32.25.
Snyder was joined in the girls race by five teammates who also qualified for states including freshman Jenna Sheldon (1:54.73, 13th), freshman Victoria Uglyar (1:57.74, 19th), freshman Kenzie Ricardi (1:58.14, 21st), freshman Paige Peterson (2:00.22, 25th) and junior Sam Cheek (2:00.30, 26th).
Hodge was the only state qualifier on Friday for the Tigers, as other top finishers included seniors Brennan Creen (1:43.71, 30th) and Ryan Adis (1:44.28, 31st).
In the team competition, the Tigers finished in fourth place in both competitions, with 151 points in the girls competition and with 147 points in the boys.
Basketball
Both the Summit varsity boys and girls basketball teams dropped home contests versus Steamboat Springs on Friday night at Summit High School.
In the girls matchup, the Tigers led after the first quarter before the Sailors went on a 13-3 run in the second quarter that proved too much for Summit to make up, ultimately losing 46-35. Tigers junior Anna Tomlinson led Summit in the scoring department with 13 points buoyed by a 9-14 performance from the free throw line. She also hauled in seven rebounds. With the loss, the Tigers’ record dropped to 5-10 on the season and 2-4 in 4A Western Slope League play.
The Tigers’ boys squad lost to the Sailors 53-40 after their fell behind 30-12 at halftime. The Tigers are 5-12 on the season and 0-6 in league play.
