Summit Middle School is experiencing a wave of illnesses, with 15 percent of students absent

A wave of flu-like illnesses has hit Summit Middle School hard. The district reports that SMS is experiencing elevated absentee rates with 15 percent of students out sick Wednesday, Feb. 13. The district said that nurses at the middle school are working closely with the county’s Department of Public Health to ensure students are safe and proper precautions are being taken, and is also monitoring and documenting symptoms displayed by students. The district reports that symptoms most commonly being reported are fatigue, muscle aches and fever. Students who appear to be showing symptoms are being directed to the school nurse’s office, and so far the illness does not seem serious. The district also reported that SMS custodial staff are taking precautions, including wiping down surfaces, door knobs and other points of contact. Parents are advised to check on their children and check for symptoms, and to seek medical attention if their conditions worsen.
