Just another moment in scene history.
Over the weekend, we marked a milestone in scene culture. We marked 10 years since blink-182 frontman Mark Hoppus shaved off Pete Wentz’ emo tresses during Fall Out Boy‘s encore at Madison Square Garden.
Gone was the signature emo fringe, in one swift motion of Hoppus’ clippers. And lo, it came to pass that the loss of Pete’s emo fringe also marked the end of another era – it was the last set that Fall Out Boy would perform for four years.
That’s right, the loss of Pete’s hair was actually a visual metaphor for our loss of Fall Out Boy, and it was their last set before they announced their hiatus.
During Fall Out Boy’s signature set closer ‘Saturday’, one of their crew took over bass duties, while Mark Hoppus joined the band on stage and just… shaved Pete’s head.
Watch the truly chaotic video below:
And that night, October 04, 2009, Pete ended the show by saying “are you watching closely? Abracadabra”. Then two weeks later, Fall Out Boy announced their hiatus. That was his subtle nod to what was coming.
Truly, a moment. An iconic moment.
