Diana Ross stopped by the 61st Annual Grammy Awards to celebrate her 75th birthday. The legendary singer was recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012.
Before Ross took the stage, an Alicia Keys-narrated video package highlighted Ross’ varied, successful and still strong career. Ross’ grandson took the stage to introduce her, giving a spirited speech. Ross came out in a huge red gown to begin belting “Best Years of My Life” as her family sang along in the audience. She followed the ballad with her debut single as a solo artist, 1970’s “Reach Out and Touch (Somebody’s Hand).”
Ross’ Lifetime Achievement Award is her only Grammy win, although she was nominated for 12 awards from 1965 to 1983 — both as part of the Supremes and as a solo artist. Just a few days prior to her Grammy appearances, the singer launched her latest Las Vegas residency, titled Diamond Diana. It will run until February 23rd.
On Ross’ actual 75th birthday, March 26th, nearly 700 theaters will show Diana Ross Live in Central Park, a concert film documenting her stormy two nights of performing at Central Park’s Great Lawn in 1983. The film was first issued on DVD in 2012. A second screening of the concert film will air on March 28th. It is part of Diana Ross: Her Life, Love and Legacy, a film celebrating the singer’s life and career full of unseen footage and messages from friends and family.
