Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd Lead ‘Back to the Future’ Reunion on Josh Gad’s ‘Reunited Apart’

The cast of the Back to the Future films, including Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd, reunited on the second episode of Josh Gad’s new YouTube series, Reunited Apart.

The episode included appearances from other cast members Lea Thompson, Mary Steenburgen and Elisabeth Shue, plus a surprise appearance at the end from Claudia Wells, who played Marty McFly’s girlfriend Jennifer in the first movie before the character was re-cast with Shue for the second and third films.

Director Robert Zemeckis and screenwriter Bob Gale also joined the reunion, as did Huey Lewis — who wrote “The Power of Love” and “Back in Time” for the first film — and the trilogy’s composer Alan Silvestri. For good measure, Gad even roped in director J.J. Abrams simply because he loves Back to the Future.

As with the first installment of Reunited Apart with the cast and crew of The Goonies, the Back to the Future episode featured stories from production and the recreation of several iconic scenes (over 30 years later, Fox can still really sell the classic line, “Wait a minute Doc, are you trying to tell me my mom has the hots for me?”).

The cast also shared some ideas for a possible Back to the Future reboot or additional sequel: Lloyd pitched a clever crossover with Rick and Morty while Thompson deadpanned that a good plot would be for someone to travel back to January to warn everyone about COVID-19.

To help bring the show to a close, the cast of the upcoming Back to the Future musical shared an individually recorded and expertly stitched together rendition of “The Power of Love.” The Back to the Future reunion also doubled as a fundraiser for Project Hope and its COVID-19 recovery and relief efforts.
